then and now

was watching the spell bee competition last night. cool it was! all those indian boys and girls! totally smart and totally confident on an international stage!

looking at them i was wondering what was i like when i was their age? 13! apart from reading P&P a hundred times and being a raving fan of the brooding darcy!

all i did at that age was read. that was my only interest and hobby and whatever you want to call it.

tried to learn carnatic music but it only resulted in a cacaphony and i wasn't inspired to continue. at school, we were taught hymns and carols and all those dainty english songs - those were fun. esp. when you sang in a group and didn't have to worry too much about sruti and swarasthanams and what not.

when i tried water colors, the colors would all get mixed up (maybe bcos of more water than the paint?) and you wouldn't know what from what.

never had the patience to sit and do learn the creative stuff ... maybe it was just me! i know so many of my classmates who were and are still so multi-talented! how do they do it?

Now, at 13, Kids out here are busy preparing for JEE.

I find spelling bee to be a very stressfull affair. Maybe its jsut my misconception. Probably the kids who go through its preparation have a good time after all.

But you read P&P so many times? Still reading?:). Got to check on your Mr.S

i found it very stressful too airspy. just watching those kids go through the ordeal! "language of origin", "different kinds of pronounication" etc. was glad i was ignorant at my age. at least dont carry any guilt.

i know it's J2ee these days. (shudder!)

cb, oh yeah, music i got hooked into in iit. guess was looking for some excuse to get away from studies. sleep was there too. never understood the need to doze off right before the exams!

i am uncomfortable with the spelling bee thing as well. not to mention JEE coaching. And JEE itself.

at least for me, my constant multi-tasking and parallel processing are essential!! (but you could, of course, link it to the fact that I never for that elusive CENTUM in math! :-)) I would say, to each her own PG. & of course, parenthetically, parents should just BACK OFF and stop stressing kids out.

of course, to each his/her own. but i think parents who dont pressurize their kids must be a smaller number.

thankfully, we have more choices now - and not just engg and med as in our times! that's encouraging. and kids these days have a mind of their own! does that make it easier for the parents? i hope:)

the the kids on spell bee defintiely seemed to be enjoying what they were doing! it hurt my brain just looking at them - words i never heard in my life!
